Iran and Britain

Journalist Christopher de Bellaigue, who lived in Iran for several years, investigates Iranian suspicions that the hidden hand of the British secretly controls events in Iran.

Iran is a country of conspiracy theories. Iranians tend to see the devious hand of the English behind what goes on in Iran. Britain’s involvement in Iran’s oil industry and economy, and her role in the rise and fall of kings, prime ministers and governments has bred a lasting suspicion and cynicism. Even the Islamic Revolution was in some quarters blamed on Britain.

While the United States of America has now overtaken Britain as Iran’s great enemy, scepticism over British interests and the legacy of British involvement in Iran overshadow relations to this day.
